Meet Christina Boyer-Thompson
From Her Classroom To Yours
For Christina Boyer-Thompson, The Kindergarten Caterpillar began in the classroom, not on a blank page. After 33 years in early education, including her current work as a Kindergarten teacher in a rural Massachusetts town, she knows that a school year is made up of much more than worksheets and lessons. It is made of small discoveries, new friendships, growing confidence, and the excitement of reaching the end together.
She created The Kindergarten Caterpillar as a special way to commemorate her Kindergarten graduation ceremony. Since 2009, her classes have performed the story for their families on graduation day, turning the book into a tradition shared by generations of students.
That classroom history is part of what makes the story distinctive. The caterpillar moves through the same school-year rhythm that young learners recognize: October brings the Alphabet, November brings math, December brings phonics, January focuses on friendship, February brings the reading library, March explores science, and April turns to writing. By May, the caterpillar is tired enough to learn one more important lesson about getting plenty of rest.
Outside the classroom, Christina performs with local community bands, playing clarinet and tenor and baritone saxophones, and runs a small home-based bakery.
